My man Corei Taylor inspired this post today… check out his rendition as well. Let me know what you think…
Black Music Month!!!!
On repeat today…
…because I haven’t felt a drop since I have been here…
Black Music Month runs the gamut.
Being a native Detroiter and a fan of gospel music, there was no way I would not be influenced by the Winans. “Trust in God” was never a mega hit for them but it has always been one of my favorites. So soulful and a real testimony that has always spoken to me.
I didnt know which of the many Winans songs I should post as the second one for this post…until I got a response from a very close friend. S/O to Khadijah. I posted this one for you. Its actually my favorite rendition (from the Live at Carnegie Hall album) and I can almost tell the story like Marvin Winans himself.
By the way, when you need the quintessential gospel voice to accompany you… Marvin Winans ALWAYS fits the bill.
This harkens back to the politically tinged hip-hop that originally sparked my interest in the genre. Gotta support artistry like this..
S/O to Sheldon Bertram for telling me about this song first.
I think the first tape I actually bought myself was the 2nd New Edition album (with Baby Love & Maryanne on it). The Heartbreak album (their fourth, released my senior year in high school) is easily a classic album. These three you can find on that album.
Listen and Learn young fellas…
I play this song to remind myself, too.
